Brown tourist signs are designed to help drivers find attractions more easily. But do they make journeys smoother or simply send more traffic to the same places?

If you've driven around Norfolk recently, you may have noticed more brown tourist signs appearing on local roads.

Their job is simple.

Help visitors find attractions without relying entirely on sat-navs.

For families heading out for the day, that's no bad thing. A clearly placed sign can make an unfamiliar journey less stressful and reduce those last-minute lane changes when a turning suddenly appears.

But a brown sign doesn't automatically make every journey better.

It can also encourage more visitors to use the same roads, the same junctions and the same car parks.

That's why the real question isn't whether the signs are brown.

It's whether they improve the overall journey.

Do they appear early enough for drivers to react safely?

Is parking available when people arrive?

Can nearby roads cope during weekends and school holidays?

At the moment, there isn't enough verified local evidence to answer those questions for Norfolk's latest signs.

We don't yet have confirmed information showing where every new sign has been installed, how visitor numbers have changed or whether nearby roads have become busier as a result.

That means it's too early to say whether the latest signs have been a success.

What we do know is that good tourist signs should do more than point people in the right direction.

They should make journeys simpler without creating new problems for local communities.

That's something we'll continue to follow as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, we'd like your help.
