There are bargains… and then there are the bargains that become part of your personality.

The ones you mention “by the way” at dinner. The ones you casually drop into conversation when someone compliments your lamp, your coat, your coffee table, your bookcase, your wedding-guest outfit.

“Thanks. Charity shop. Four quid.”

And suddenly, you’re not just a person who owns a nice chair you’re a person who won.

Norfolk is good for this kind of victory.

A county of market towns and villages, of house moves and clear-outs, of visitors and locals constantly passing things on.

The joy is that second-hand shopping isn’t just about saving money (though that helps).

It’s also about useful things staying useful, and ordinary items becoming unexpectedly special.

So we’re asking one simple question, and we want the details.

What is the best thing you have ever found in a Norfolk charity shop, reuse centre or community shop and what did it cost?

Not “best” as in most expensive. Best as in:

• The find you still think about

• The thing you use every day

• The item that looks like it shouldn’t have been there

• The bargain that felt like the universe gave you a wink

• The purchase that solved a problem right when you needed it to.

A few examples of the kind of story we mean (these are hints, not real reader finds):

Maybe it was a coat that fit like it was made for you — and still had the original label attached.

Maybe it was a chair for £4 that everyone now assumes is antique.

Maybe it was a pile of cookbooks that turned out to be exactly the ones you’ve been hunting for, or a set of glasses that replaced the ones you broke, or a kid’s bike that got you through a summer.

Or maybe it was something so Norfolk it can’t be explained properly unless you mention the road you were on, the weather, and the fact you “only popped in for a look”.

What we’re collecting (and what we’ll do with it)

We are building a Norfolk Spotlight round-up of finds based on your answers.

If you tell us what you found and where you found it, we can:

• Share the best stories in a future Spotlight piece

• Help other readers discover the places worth a rummage

• Show how far second-hand buying can go for kitting out a home, a wardrobe, a hobby or a student flat

• Give a little love to the local shops and centres keeping good stuff in circulation

To be clear: we’re not asking you to prove anything. We’re asking for your story, in your own words, with enough detail to make it useful to others (and believable :>).

Your brag-worthy-find checklist

When you nominate, include as many of these as you can:

1) What you found. Be specific. “A lamp” is fine, but “a heavy brass anglepoise-style lamp with a green shade” is better.

2) What you paid

Even an approximate price is helpful.

3) Where you found it

The name of the charity shop, community shop or reuse centre and the town or area.

4) Why it was such a win

Was it the quality, the condition, the brand, the weirdness, the timing, the fact it fixed a problem, or just the thrill?

5) Any useful extra details

For example: what it’s used for now, whether it needed any repairs, or what you spotted that other people might overlook.

6) A quick line for the place you’re nominating

Was it well organised?

Good for furniture?

Great for books?

Friendly volunteers?

 A constantly changing rail?

Tell us what a first-timer should know.

A note on “value” (and a gentle reality check)

Sometimes the best finds aren’t about resale value at all they’re about not having to buy something new. A sturdy saucepan for a fiver that lasts ten years is a win even if it’s not “rare”.

If your story includes a guess about what something might be worth, frame it as your own belief rather than a fact.

(For example: “I think it would’ve cost a lot new,” or “Friends keep telling me it looks antique.”)

And if you’re the kind of person who knows exactly what a certain mark, maker or label means brilliant.

Tell us what you know, and how you know it.

Why this matters beyond the bargain

Charity shops, reuse centres and community shops sit right at the intersection of cost of living, community funding, and waste reduction.

But the bit we don’t talk about enough is the confidence they give people.

A second-hand win can make a home feel more like a home. It can help someone start a job with the right clothes. It can get a student set up without rinsing their overdraft. It can turn “we’ll have to make do” into “this is actually lovely”.

That’s why we want your stories the practical ones, the funny ones, the oddly proud ones.

Nominate the place where you found your best bargain

MAKE YOUR NOMINATION

Tell us: what you found, what it cost, and the Norfolk charity shop, reuse centre or community shop where it happened.

If you can, add one tip for other readers about what that place is especially good for.

We’ll pull together the most interesting, specific nominations for a future Norfolk Spotlight round-up the kind you’ll want to bookmark before your next Saturday mooch.
